I love museum shops and I love false eyelashes but I never expected to see the combination. And I surely (don't call me Shirley!) didn't expect them to look like this....

The Victoria and Albert Museum, as a part of their Imperial Chinese Robes exhibition, is offering small paper-cut pony eyelashes.

2 pairs of small paper-cut eyelashes.

Derived from a fascination with the Chinese tradition of fine papercut work, these false eyelashes are a fun and modern interpretation.

Intricately cut and delicately pretty, the design is infused with symbolic meaning rooted in Chinese culture: horses (ponies) are symbolic of success.

Review - Chanel Rouge Coco Lipstick #22 Paris

I am not a huge make-up person. I don't wear a lot and I'm not good with experimentation or pushing the boundaries on color. I just don't have the face for it. So I typically go for pretty colors and simple looks. I love mascara and a good lipstick and gloss. I have recently started trying out the L'oreal Studio Secrets primer, maybe dot on some Prescriptives custom base (which I've been using for 15+ years) and a dusting of translucent powder.

I don't spend a lot on eyeshadow or powder, etc., but I do like to splurge a bit on lipstick. And my favorite is Chanel.

As you can see, I have quite a few. The big problem is that I tend to fall in love with a shade and then find out it was a seasonal limited color and have to try and find replacements. Then I hoard the little amount I have left, doling it out only on special occasions.

The most recent color I fell for was the Chanel Rouge Coco #22 "Paris".

I saw this vibrant, almost fuchsia, pink on Sandra Bullock at the Oscars this year and had to track down that pink.

There was quite a run on the color but I eventually got my tube.. and it is bright!

The range comes in colors from browns to pinks to corals perfect for the looks seen in the Spring 2011 shows. I may go and check out the brownish-pink "Mademoiselle" and just got the coraly-red #58 "Audace" (to be reviewed soon).

I find this color to be very intense going on out of the tube. It's soft and moisturizing but not overly creamy. This color has a real shine to it. It's not shimmery at all.

When I combine this with my bright red hair it's kind of a contrast, so I like to blot it. You still get quite a good pink but not so in your face. I can stop there if I want to keep a matte look but I usually layer this with a darker toned lipstick or top with a slightly more coral gloss.

I luvvvv the Glossimers too! My favorite is #15 "Spark".

I find it challenging to buy make-up, especially lipstick. The tube never gives you a real look at the color or the feel or the application. They need to sell more mini-tubes like perfume samples so you could wear it a time or two before you commit.

I've received a few samples of products including toners, lotions and nail polish, as well as a few new make-up items I've bought. I plan on doing more reviews so keep an eye out for the Bubblegum Plastic banner.

But they have totally targeted my weakness... luggage. And not just luggage, but small little cases covered with sweet, sweet floral prints.

I have way too many suitcases and mini-travel cases. I really do not need this but, they are very hard to resist!

I love cute little whimsical necklaces, especially from the talented folks on Etsy. When I was browsing around the other day, I saw this sweet cloud and rain necklace from Mixko.

The piece is about 4" from the top of the little felted cloud to the bottom crystal raindrop.

Even though it is a raincloud, it's a happy little cloud with sparkly blue raindrops. So it makes you smile!

The choice of a new generation

There is little to no doubt that I am giddy for the new iPhone 4G. Better display, more functional interface, additional features plus Face Time!

But now I need to really decide - black...

or white?

They are both slick and have a gorgeous look. I'm torn torn torn! Black is more edgy and techy but white is so clean and slick. I leaning towards the white one and it will go with my current case and computer bag.

Now I just need to get the hubby on it too so we can video chat.

Tickled Pink

I am not a purse or bag person. I like don't covet the latest "it" bags and I don't have a huge amount of purses. I'm also pretty picky about what I look for in a bag. I like a classic shape in an interesting color.

I don't want it to be too huge and I usually prefer to carry it on my arm rather than over my shoulder. I don't like soft-sided bags; I actually want them to have some structure to them.

I have a few small bags and clutches but they rarely get used and are usually vintage. Most of the purses I own I keep for years and years and tend to be very lazy about changing them out. I carried my Emerald Alto bag for 2 years straight. The color range for my day-to-day purses includes emerald green, dark orange, sky blue, white and a croc brown. In the Fall I was thinking about a black patent but didn't findy anything I really wanted so that's by the wayside for now.

But for some reason I'm really considering pink.

I started out looking at this pink Emily Satchel from Coach.

It has a great shape, just the right amount of detailing, is the right size and gives the options of carrying on your arm or over your shoulder.

But I wanted to see what non-leather options were out there too. I don't really go purse shopping that much so I thought this would be a great opportunity to see what's out there.

I started out at Matt and Nat, purveyors of some of the best, most stylish vegan bags around. After searching by color I found this cutie - the Tundra-Stellar. It's also a good size and very cute. A bit more of an edge than the Emily but you could carry this to work and out afterwards.

If you are a bit more casual, I think the AstroSatchel's Cherry Blossom messenger is the cutest. This line has a ton of fun graphic designs.

I branched out into more vibrant pinks with this larger Verena satchel. I love the buckles on the end. Plus it comes in five equally eye-catching colors.

The Morgan has a bit of the "doctor-bag" shape to it, which I really like. It was tempting to show it in the gorgeous dandelion versus the raspberry, plus there are two other colors!

If I still want a patent bag in the Fall, I'm coming right back for this Mariah design. It's hard to choose between the amazing colors. The maroon and olive ones here are my favorites but there is also a stunning sapphire and a dark grey. Plus it's under $50, if you can believe that.

As I was searching for vegan options, I found these amazing Vegan Queen pieces. These are expensive but they are amazing. I first spotted the Eco It Bag, as bowling bag shaped piece with vintage hardware...

But then I was stunned by the City Bag. This piece is decadent and simply gorgeous. As I said, I'm not an purse girl but this almost makes me reconsider.

Well, we ended on a high (priced) note but most of these are very resonable, plus vegan, plus CUTE! Have you seen any I should add to the list? Make me into a purse girl too.

In Need of a bit of Whimsy

Emotionally it's been more clouds than sunshine around here. So when I was on Etsy the other day and saw this adorable and clever necklace I realalized that a bit of whimsy was just what I needed to brighten my day.

I love the unique and clever idea of making the clouds from rolled jersey and the tiny ceramic blue bird perched there.

I can't wait to pair this with a breezy dress and tees for Summer.

Sparkle Sparkle Joy Joy

It cracks me up that as I'm watching old episodes of L.A. Ink with the hubby that almost all of the jewelry the girls wear on the show is Tarina Tarantino. Cute tattoo-ed girls love the sparkly goodness of her designs.

I only have one tiny tattoo myself but I've been a big fan of her crystal pave heart necklaces and was actually searching them up on her store and eBay just this week. Luckily they were part of the ideeli sale and I was able to nab my two favorite colors for about half the regular price. Wooo hooo!

Trick the Eye - Chanel Trompe L-oeil Tattoos

While I was not (and am still not) enamored with the Chanel Spring/Summer 2010 clogs, I did fall in love with the overall aesthetic... especially the use of the temporary tattoos on the models.

They added an unexpected layer of frill, froth and girliness and I was a smitten kitten.

So when I found out they were releasing a limited edition set... well... you know those are some of my favorite words.

The kit comes with 55 tattoo components so you can "build your own" look.

To test them out I started off small with a pear bracelet and logo combination.

The tattos were fun and easy to apply and are still going strong, which was almost a week ago. They're a great way to add a layer or wear jewelry when you don't want to wear real jewelry because it might get damaged or lost. I can't wait to mix these in with other bracelets or necklaces.

Keep Me Covered: Tights on Gilt

As you probably know, I'm a huge fan of tights. Solid colors, patterned, lacy, you name it.

I've been asked before where I get my tights and while I do keep an eye out all time time, I do have a few favorites. Check them out here.

But I need to add a new resource to the list... Gilt!

I have recently found some really cute tights on the site, marked down, and was able to snatch a few of them up before they sold out.

I grabbed a pair of these matte black tights with grey diamonds from the Valentino & Wolford collaboration. Wolford tights are typically around $50+ but they are so well made. I have a pair I bought over 10 years ago and they are still in perfect condition.

These are pretty subtle and can easily be worn at work.

I have a real fondness for pin-striped tights and these Cynthia Rowley tights have a great taupe and blue stripe.

These are also Cynthia Rowley and even cuter in person. I wore them on a client trip paired up with a basic black top and pencil skirt. The tights added a layer of interest and had a bit of sparkle as well.

Remember, you don't have to limit yourself to just muted colors, have some fun with it!

Spikes and Sparkles: nOir Stack Pyramid Rings

Spike encrusted accessories seem to be my new thing. I'm trying not to go overboard, but I just can't seem to help myself.

When I heard nOir jewelry was on Gilt, I immediately downloaded the iPhone app and snatched this set of mixed metal spike rings. Luckily I was able to get a set because I know a number of other blogging ladies were excited about these too! I think we have a photo planned.

The mixed metal set is glamorous and shiny and sparkly in person. I had bought a size 7 set to wear on my middle finger but I found them to run pretty small. I wasn't the only person to find that to be true. I would say mine fit a size 5.5 or 6 rather than a typical 7.

Because they ran small I was wearing them on my ring finger and I have to say, these would make a kick-ass wedding set. When I stack them I've been wearing the wide silver band topped with the gold band then the rhinestone band.

Not that these are a very expensive set. Their regular price is only $60.

nOir has a ton of other necklaces, bracelets and rings ranging from more studs to crystal encrusted animals. I love the quality of my rings so I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for them on Gilt again.

Joomi Lim Jewelry - Love Hurts

Don't you just love when you stumble upon something and then, unexpectedly, fall in love?

After the Blogger Meet-up during Fashion Week, I made a point to head over to my favorite Bergdorfs. Even if I don't get something I like to have a quick browse around the shoe salon, take in the windows and just soak in the shopping atmosphere I don't get at home.

While I was taking the escalators from floor to floor, I noticed this lovely lady standing next to her gorgeous jewelry on display.

Joomi Lim was at Bergdorfs doing a small trunk show of her "Love Hurts" series and we were able to chat for a bit. I tried on a number of her pieces which were very layered and textured, featuring pearls, spikes and mixed metals.

I was totally drawn to the spiked necklaces and debated about the long version or the choker.

In the end I went with the long necklace version because not only is it a great length to wear alone or combined with other pieces, it triple wraps perfectly as a bracelet (Thanks for the suggestion, Joomi!).

I've worn it at least 5 times already since I bought it and just love it. It has a great weight, is very comfortable and a fun addition to toughen up a sweet dress or work outfit. I mix metals a lot so I really liked the two tone version.

I'm late to join the appreciating crowd but I am happy to finally be a part of the Lady Gaga fan club. As her popularity grows, I'm excited to see designers of all levels embracing the risk taking element that, to me, is her greatest appeal.

This is something I'm in the process of writing about over on Shoe Daydreams. I'm sick to death of designers and companies dumbing down their designs to try and get them to sell in the mass market. In this day and with these economic times, I don't want to spend my money on boring and safe. I want it to be worth my hard earned dollars.

Since I bought the last spiked headband, you can't get it but there are other pieces. I wish I could have bought these too. Like the aluminum eyepatch from "Paparazzi"...

These, as I mentioned, were from the Lady Gaga group but they have a lot of other amazing clothes and accessories in the shop. I know where I will be keeping my eye out for new talent and unique pieces.

Sparkle Like Tom Binns

I am a big fan of colorful and sparkly and pine away for a Tom Binns flower cuff. But, well, they are a bit out of the range I want to spend, no matter how sparkly they are.

So when I walked into Anthropologie over the weekend and I saw these giant multi-colored cuffs beckoning me from the jewelry table, I knew I had to have them.

These are big, about 2.5" wide.

They come in two other colors but they are more tonal. I prefer these with all the different stones. I got two and plan on wearing them with an equally bright top to cap off each sleeve. Of course they would also be great with a party dress but I like to wear my sparkle every day.

Acme Made Laptop - Kate

I have been on the lookout for a good laptop bag for a while now. I've already broken the straps on two because I have a tendency to carry way too much stuff and carry it around all the time.

I have a lot of criteria too and because of this I actually resorted to, after breaking the straps on one bag, tying the straps together just so I could keep using it.

This is not classy or professional.

I don't think what I want is really that outrageous but apparently laptop bag companies do not agree.

Here is what I was looking for:

- Able to hold my 15" laptop
- Room to hold all the cords, portable disc drive and files I bring home with me every night
- Sturdy straps that are long enough to swing over my shoulder and wide enough so that I don't cut off circulation in my arm in the process
- Be cute
- Not be too expensive (ideally $100 or way under)

I have had cloth bags and vinyl, so the material was less of an issue to me than the style but I did want to avoid leather.

I was reading VegNews a few months back and saw this really cute bag highlighted but at the time I wasn't sure of the material or the size (and my current bag and not fallen completely into shreds yet) so I waited. But I was at BlogWorld this past week and saw a girls carrying the exact bag I was looking at, the Acme Made Kate style. It even comes with this cute matching pouch to tuck in side (or use as a clutch).

I just got this tonight but I'm already excited to take it to work tomorrow. It fits on my shoulder great and I was able to comfortably fit in all the crap I carry around. I ordered the white with orange stitching but it also comes in the black with purple.

This is the most perfect case I've seen in a long while but check out their other styles too. If they are made as well as this one, you will be in good shape.

Let the Wild Rumpus Start

Sometimes you just have to go where your heart leads you.

Now I was never a huge fan of "Where the Wild Things Are" as a child. I was never a "wild rumpus" kind of kid and I actually liked going to my room.

So while I may not be anticipating the movie as much as many other people are, I did get a but rumpus-y about the WTWTA collaboration with Opening Ceremony. I think the fur suits are a bit to far into the "furry" realm but I love the coats and shawls and I totally fell for this full skirt.

Who wouldn't want to wear a bit of crazy fuzziness every now and again.

I plan on wearing this with dark brown tights for winter but how cute is this with the strappy sandals for warmer months?

Maybe there's a bit of Max's wolfishness in me after all.

I like art. I'm especially fond of prints and photography and have bought quite a few from Etsy, art shows and when traveling.

In addition to supporting artists on Etsy, I am really fond of 20x200. They always have an interesting artist pick or feature. Plus you can't beat the price!

And really, while I don't have much room left at home or at work and I have things I already need to get framed, I'm still drawn to these pieces. So much so that I just bought them.

Vogue July 07: page 145 (Ripeness is All)

These two prints by Laura DiCioccio are created using an interesting tecnique -

I make sculptures and paintings about my anticipatory nostalgia for obsolescing paper media objects. The softness of a read newspaper page and the glossy slickness of a fresh magazine page are sensations embedded in our physical memory — the familiarity of touching these objects allows a relationship to form in the process of consuming the information they provide. When these objects disappear from our culture and assume the homogeneous texture of a back-lit screen, I fear that some of our intimacy with the process of reading will fade.

Fashion magazines are the source materials for my series color codification dot drawings. I make each piece on a sheet of frosted mylar laid over a magazine page. After assigning a color to every letter in the alphabet (numbers are in grayscale, 0=white and 9=black), I apply tiny dots of paint over every character on the page. Each drawing I make has a different color codification, and therefore a different palette. The resulting painting is a legible blur of dots in the form of the article’s layout — like a system of Braille for the color inclined.

As a fan of the printed word, graphics and color, these appeal to me and resonate with me. I think they are going to be a great addition to my work space but they would also be great at home too.

Vintage Inspiration - Ears

Whimsical hats (and hats in general) are making quite a resurgance in the market right now. But facinators and, especially, ears are popping up all over. We've seen ears in runway shows, in designer collaborations with Disney, and for Ascot.

While everyone is ga-ga over the "innovative" ears, I think this 1920's girl was the quirky ear-wearing girl of her time. Look at her... she's adorable.

I may need to get a pair of my own. Personally I like these lace ones from Maison Michel.

Now if only I could hop on a plane to Paris to get them in person!

Almost a year ago (and Queen Michelle even longer) I've been a fan of Bebaroque's range of amazing tights and stockings.

It's good to see them more and more getting the attention they deserve.

According to Vogue UK -

For Like Ever

I don't care if everyone and their brother has this For Like Ever poster from Village. I still love it.

It's bright and clashy, especially with my vintage bamboo desk and Olivetti typewriter, but it's huge and pink and bright and gorgeous.

Now I need to go type some pen pal letters.

Red or Dark? A Survey

Okay, people. It's that time again... hair cut and color time.

As always I'm totally ascared to change my hair color. I love the red but a part of me wants to be dark and mysterious. But I'm also totally afraid I'll look too pasty and washed out. Plus, if I do it and hate it and try to change it back the red might not look as good again.

So I wimp out every time and don't do it.

So, Friday is another chance. Do I keep the red I have (and love)???

Winning the Trifecta

Alright already! We get it! I like hats.

Well, I'm excited about them mainly becuase I have now completed my trifecta. Found my holy grail. I got the cute boater and the sassy derby. But they were both new pieces. But this weekend I was down at our favorite antiques store, and as i walked up to the window, I saw it. The MOST AMAZING vintage top hat. EVER!

Look at it:

Those are the eyes of a girl in luvvvvvvvvvv.....

Note: the band was on backwards and I had to fix it later but was too excited to take pictures.

Not only is the hat gorgeous and near pristine but it came with the leather carrying case. This needs to be buffed up a bit and dusted off but inside the hat fits in snugly, it has its satin and velvet and the straps to hold everything in place.

I would love love love to take this with me to New York but it's almost too nice (not too mention delicate) to travel with. I think I'm just going to have to wear this around town and to work every day for the next year.

Pretty Pink - TokyoMade Chapter Pinky Sparkle Ring

I've had my eye out for a Chapter ring from TokyoMade for some time now. With their Spring 2009 collection, I finally got my pink sparkly wish.

Behold!

Oh yes! I know have my very own Bubblegum Plastic-licious Pinky Sparkle ring. I LOVE IT!

This ring is, obviously big. And loud and, oh yeah, kind of heavy. I was wearing it on my right hand but had to switch so I could take a picture for you.

And just to add to the pink fun, I wore my Chinese Laundry Dagger pink glitter slingbacks.

It doesn't get much pinker or Barbie-er than this. This ring is total art. Most people aren't sure what to make of it but they like it. Coming with me to NY for sure.

Quit Stealing All My Ideas

I love hats. I can't help it. They are just so cool. I actually wear my hats. I'm pasty white so I like them for how they look and that they cover my face. I have some baseball caps but don't wear them all that often. I'd rather wear a big straw hat or something "fancier."

But unless you are at the Derby or Ascot, you don't see alot of other hats around. There has been the newsboy cap or the beat up straw cowboy hat but that's usually a trendy hipster or someone of that ilk.

I've been making a rash of recent hat purchases though. I got my boater, two cute vintage hats and talked just a month ago about getting a bowler (aka derby) hat. I've been researching the best options and had finally narrowed it down when I came upon this.... at Target!

Ummm... what the hell is a derby hat doing at freaking Target! Who is ripping off my ideas!

Okay, I know I'm probably not the only one buying/wearing a bowler hat but it's not like you are seeing a lot of them around getting all popular. Where did the buyer at Target come up with this one? Is this a growing trend that I am totally unaware of but subliminally influence by?

Well, I thought about buying the Target derby because, hey, it was $15 which is a bit cheaper than the ones I looked at. In the end, though, I passed. The main reason is because of the brim. A real derby/bowler isn't turned up all the way around like that, so it wasn't giving me the right look.

What I did buy is this one:

This one I bought through a vendor on Amazon. I hope it fits okay and looks good when I get it. I'm thinking of taking it with me to NYC. I tried to find a good vintage one but all the ones I tried were too big. Kind of a bummer, that.

Anyway, there were other options too, if you were looking for one.

The V&A Museum has one as a part of their Hat Anthology exhibit. This is where my boater came from. They only have 2 sizes though.

Berkely Hats seems to have a lot of hat options and their derbys come in several colors

I had first looked at the ones that Historical Emporium was selling but wasn't sure of it. I may get my next hat (a grey top hat) from here.

If I had the cash ($300) I would have loved to have splurged on a Christy's derby. It looks gorgeous.

Oh, Wolfie, Oh Wolfie... You're the One!

Wendy Brandes has been one of my favorite bloggers for ages because she is a hilarious and talented writer. Of course, she is better known for her unique and delicious jewelry too.

I wish that I could have about 15 of her pieces but, you know... you have to start somewhere.

Wendy currently is in production with a great new piece - a whistle that opens up to reveal a tiny wolf. Continuing the literary tradition of most of her work, the Virginia Woolf whistle (lol!) is really cool but I actually fell in love with the inside element... the adorable wolfie.

I had to have it! So witty! So cute!

Oh, yeah, that's right, that image is totally swiped from Wend'y's site. I need to take a picture wearing my new piece.

While I love the author connection, the real reason I got it is because I've long had a love affair with wolves ever since high school. Here is an old photo of me. And yes, that is a real live wolf in the photo, Chimo. I still love him!

You may not know this but I am a huge huge HUGE fan of hats. I mean, I love all kinds of hair accessories, from combs to fascinators but I love a fancy hat. This should not come as a huge surprise because I kind of love all of the retro accessories that are inching their way back.

Parasols - Check!

Gloves - Check!

Hats - Double Check!

I think I've been buying hats since at least college. And no, I'm not talking baseball caps, I mean real hats in hat boxes. I have several straw hats, a black straw top hat with a veil and long black ribbons down the back, pink rolled brims with a puff-dotted veil, black and tan swirled ones and more.

So I was kind of all swoony over the Marc Jacobs S/S 2009 RTW show. The mix of patterns and styles and eras was great but I was mostly interested in the hats. I love the jaunty boater-style hats that he showed. I've always found this style to be so adorable.

And yes, these are actually making it to stores. eLuxury has the adorable boaters, made by Stephen Jones no less, in the black and the red. The prices are not beyond what I would have expected - $375 - but that does make them a bit pricey.

But in a moment of splendid serendipity, the Victoria & Albert Museum is doing an exhibition with Mr. Jones all about hats. And even better, the V&A Museum Shop (I love a good museum shop... more on that in a later post) has some amazing pieces for the exhibition... including pieces from Stephen's Snoxells of London line.

WendyB clued me in to some of the cuter pieces for this exhibition but I was drawn immediately to the boater hat that was available. Even better, this adorable thing is only £15! Can you believe it?

So, yes, I've ordered this already! I only wish I could hop a plane to see the show in person. It sounds amazing:

Working with radical hat designer, Stephen Jones, the V&A will present an 'Anthology of Hats'. Drawn from V&A and international collections and ranging in style and period from a 17th-century Puritan's hat to a 1950s Balenciaga couture piece to hats by Jones and his contemporaries including to the latest creations by young milliners such as Noel Stewart, the exhibition will investigate the cultural and historic importance of millinery.

The exhibition will be arranged in four main themes - Inspiration looks at the myriad of sources including historicism, exoticism and the natural world; Creation explores the techniques, materials and processes; The Salon focuses on the buying and selling of hats and the millinery shop; and The Clients which will examine the wearing and etiquette of hats and will feature headgear worn by well known clients of some of the world's top milliners including Audrey Hepburn, Isabella Blow, Anna Piaggi, Dita von Teese.

If anyone wants to get me the exhibition anthology, one of the hat boxes or one of the amazing hats... I'd totally take it... I'm just saying.

If you want to find some other amazing hats or fascinators, I personally love Topsy Turvy Design and KissCurl on Etsy. I have pieces from both of them and love them. Miss Mischief also just did a great post on some gorgeous pieces on Etsy , including some fun pieces she made herself. I think I'm going to have to do another huge order on there.

Next need for me is a black bowler and a grey top hat.

Imitation = Flattery?

I know a big part of what Pat Field likes to do is play with the high and reinterpret to the low but sometimes I think she goes a bit wrong... off into the tacky direction.

The obvious original piece - the YSL Mail clutch. Sleek, shiny and classic. I have to admit I adore this.

Pricey... yes, that too.

I applaud Ms. Field for making the style accessible but the way its done just looks a bit chintzy to me. It's too colorful. Too trying to look like a real piece of air mail. It loses the streamlined graphic design that makes the YSL version so appealing.

Express Mail Clutch by Pat Field -

I know you don't want a total knock-off but it is obvious to me where the "inspiration" came from. By trying to distance itself from the original it just came out messy. Rather a closer inspired design in maybe a new fresh color (hot pink? bright aqua?) that would have been a better way to go.

Tied to Tights

I am a huge fan of socks, tights and stockings. I wear them all year long but especially in the Winter and Fall. I don't like to wear pants as much as I do skirts so they help to keep me warm but they also are just such a great way to easily change up a look.

If you are over on Shoe Daydreams, you will see tights from all over. I've boughts some great opaque bright tights from JCrew and the range can be as inexpensive as Target to as pricey as Chanel. I just tend to be a sucker for a great color and great, unique patterns or details.

But over all there are four key places I go back to again and again.

1. StockinGirl -

This site has the most amazing range from warm and snuggly to sexy thigh-his. I've bought some cute tonal striped pairs from them.

2. We Love Colors -

Their name truly says it all. A huge range or colors in multiple styles. They're very comfortable and typically only about $8... so you can stock up!

3. Joy of Socks -

If you like a pair of patterned tights I'm wearing, chances are they are from here. They have the best designs and fun bright colors. Real stand-outs that will draw attention.

4. SockDreams -

A bit more whimsical but soft colors, especially in over the knee and thigh-high socks. I love their O Lovelies the most.

The price ranges are not too high for the four above, but if you are looking for real artwork, you have to go to Bebaroque. Pricey but worth it. I could go broke buying their pieces.

They have their new Spring/Summer collection out now and I am trying to avoid it because it is just too amazing.

If you can, you need to bring at least a pair home. You will be amazed at the work that goes into each set.

Counter Intuitive

I am the first to admit that I am no skin care or make-up expert. I have sensitive skin, don't wear a ton of make-up even for fun and I'm pretty simple about my routine.

I pretty much know what works for my pale picky skin and stick to it. And because it's so prone to freaking out in a whole variety of ways, I don't like to try new things. But I also do try to take good care of my skin. I've never slept with my make-up on and wash my face every night with Cetaphil soap. I tone with Thayers Rose Water Witch Hazel and then I use and eye cream and a face lotion/night cream. Right now I've been using Aveeno for both of those.

As we've been evolving our lifestyle, I've been adding more natural (and an added benefit is they are cheaper) elements to what I use. I use safflower oil as a body moisturiser and I've just started vitamin E oil on my face.

I tend to have oily skin in the t-zone so it seems a bit odd to add oil to my face. But since we've had less fat in our diet this actually is very comforting. After I wash my face at night, tone and moisturize, I put a few drops of the E in my palm and rub my hands together (my hands and nails benefit from this too) and press my palms lightly onto my face, neck and chest. When I wake up my skin is just glowy, which is amazing given the huge change in humidity I've undergone moving from FL to NC, especially in the winter.

I've also heard good things about olive oil soaps, lotions and cleanser from DHC but this little bottle is only around $4 and will last for ages, so way cheaper. I would definitely recommend giving it a try. Even if you don't like it on your face, you can use it on your hands and nails.

When I first saw this feather-edged capelet of Barbara Munsel's on Susie Bubble's site, I knew that I had to have it. It was delicate and ethereal and, simply... special. How could you not want it?

And when I found out there was only one going to be made, I was even less able to resist its charms. Made of the creamiest crepe de chine silk, studded with crystals and edged with fluttery feathers it's probably the most magical item I own.

I bought a garment bag for it (since I don't have a dress form... yet!) but now I need to find somewhere equally magical to wear it. And what to wear it with? I was thinking something down to earth like jeans, boots and a cami or tee in a similar color. Or a strapless dress in the same off white as the feathers.

Do you have any ideas inspired by this? I'd love for you to share them if you do!

Magic Shaving Soap Gel

I've always had a love/hate with shaving my legs. This is on so many levels. First of all I am super sensitive skin. So crazy-sensitive that I can't put on any lotion for at least 24 hours after I shave or I break out like crazy. Just using and old razor or a new kind of shave gel can also cause my to get a rash too.

The only thing I could ever use was Neutrogena oil, although I later found Khiel's Creme de Corps wasn't too bad and I found that a bottle of safflower oil (found for cheap in the grocery) works well to keep in moisture too. It doesn't have a smell so you can use plain or add in an essential oil and isn't too greasy.

Another reason I hate shaving was the whole animal testing thing that is done by makers of razors and shave gels/creams. Gilette, one of the largest brands, has been something that we have boycotted for years and years. Not only are these products expensive and wasteful (we hate how much disposable razor blades cost and how they are packaged) but they have done unneeded testing for years. Blech!

We've found some razor solutions but we've been looking for other shave gel options too. The hubby uses a Khiel's product but I've just been using a store brand can of shaving creme. But the other day, he came home from the store with this tube of Dr. Bronner's Magic Organic Fair Trade Tea Tree Shaving Soap Gel.

I've used it a few times and I have to say I like it. It has a pretty runny consistency when it comes out of the tube but then it froths up. It makes the razor move pretty easily and I haven't had any negative reactions, which is great.

If you can find this in your store, I would recommend it. I'm using the tea tree "flavor" but I now see that they have lavender and lemongrass lime (and more). I think I want to try those too.

The company also seems to have a commitment to fair trade and social responsibility. And as you know, I believe, like many people, but especially women, that it is not only the product we are buying but the company's values that are important to us too.

If you've found any good shaving solutions or companies doing a good job being socially responsible, I'd love to hear about them.

I was looking on ModCloth, which always has cute stuff, and came across these interesting tights.

Aren't they neat? But, ummm...., don't they remind you of something?

Oh yes! The amazing hand-crafted tights from Bebaroque!

Now I know printed tights are not unique but these are awfully close, don't you think.

The problem is I like ModCloth but I do have an issue with their positioning. They tend to say they have all this unique stuff but I often find or know where they really come from.

Edible Shoe Cream. Um... Why?

I'm all for organic and earth-friendly products but sometimes things, inspite of these admiration-worthy characteristics, just confuse me.

Case in point: Edible Shoe Cream.

Um... why????

According to the Terra Plana site:

I've never had coconut oil on toast. Is it good? Would this have been something Tom Hanks would have killed for (or should have made) when he was a Castaway? Do you really go through that mental check list when looking for a shoe cream?

"This looks pretty good, but my hair is really dry, I wonder if I could ad some of this shoe cream to it. It softens my shoes so maybe..."

Flowerbomb Me

I have long held a love for Viktor & Rolf. Ever since the magical shoes got away, I've admired their designs, style and openness to innovation. You may have watched their online fashion show this past season. When their site came out I went in and signed up as part of their "secret service."

I actually didn't think much of it until I got this package in the mail on Friday. I couldn't imagine what it could be but when I opened the envelope there was this lovely piece talking about the V&R perfume Flowerbomb.

Within the package was a little pink bag containing a sample of the Flowerbomb body creme and a shower gel.

I haven't tried the perfume yet, but I'm willing to give these a go. I love the pink and black packaging too. The letter with the package said they will continue surprising "official members" with info and previews and I will be the "privileged recipient of delicate attentions all year long."

Sounds intriguing. I can't wait to see what this means....

Jonathan Saunders & Swarovski

Just as Jonathan Saunders is doing a collaboration with Target, he also has a new collection with Swarovski.

I wasn't a fan of the Go International line, even though the lines and designs are sleek and sporty, but these pieces strongly appeal to the side of me that wants to go in for modern statement pieces.

The collection has rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces and I have a few favorites that I think stand out.

Of the rings, I really like the Obi rings.

I especially like the black but really, all three are just gorgeous.

The Ecuso necklace sparkles with square crystals and also comes in blue.

But my favorite piece of the whole line is the Tuscan necklace in white. I love the shape and the mix of casual style with the white leather cord paired with sparkly crystals. I think white and gold go so well together.

It comes in a black too, which is a great piece for tonal layering.

These pieces are made using an "exclusive Swarovski pointillage technique in which crystals are embedded into a ceramic-like material" which give them sort of an enameled look. I'd love to see these in person.

Skin Fair as Snow, Lips Red as the Rose

Growing up I longed to look like Snow White. I had the white skin, but I wanted the black hair and the rosy lips. As tempting as the apple, I am continually seduced by a good red lipstick. And even though I don't wear it everyday, I still continue to buy them.

Especially when you see someone like Miss WendyB look so amazing in hers! (BTW Miss Wendy, I almost stopped by MAC yesterday to get a tube of your Lasting Lust... which I may still do. Darn you, seductress!)

On a day to day basis, however, I tend to stick to rosier berry shades. Of course, like everyone else, I wear Clinque's Black Honey, but I tend to wear Chanel lipsticks most of all. Sadly for me, nearly every color I fall in love with happens to be a seasonal limited edition color or something and I have to hoard my tube for ages. I also love their Glossimers because they don't taste funny and are not too gloopy.

But while I love my lipstick and glosses, I do fear them. I was told growing up, that if you wore lipstick a lot it would make your lips less pink. Now I don't know if that's true or not or what but I don't like the sound of it. Of course, as a young girl you'll have lovely rosy lips but is it just a natural part of getting older that they don't seem as lush?

So this myth, combined with my lack of major make-up skills (I'd love the make-up skills of Miss Doe Deere) results in my having a fairly basic make-up routine. I dot on some custom blended Prescriptives base in a few spots and brush on some translucent powder. My skin has so much pink in it, I never wear blush. I love it and have some, but really don't use it. I'd look like I had a fever or a sunburn if I did. I usually only wear a single eye shadow - lately a smokey lavender, grey, silver or taupe - but I love love love mascara.

And to get a mouth that looks just kissed, I have a love affair with lip stains. It's very hard for me to resist them. Right now I have three in my make-up bag, some better than others.

I gave Revlon's Just Bitten a try. It's not bad but it as a roller-ball applicator, which I don't find to be very effective. Plus it leaks into the cap when you lay it on it's side, as I do. I should just toss it because I don't really use it that much.

My new favorite for a pink mouth is the Pixi Lip Blush in Youth at Target. It has a marker/Sharpie-like applicator and gives a great color. But, it's $18. I don't think I realized that the first time I bought. It's too bad it's so pricey. I was going to try another color too. But I guess I'll stick with this one and decide if I'll repurchase when it runs out. But I really really like it. Dilemma!

An old favorite, which is more of a balm, is the well proven Benetint lip balm. And easier application than the original Benetint with a lovely rosy smell and which gives a great color.

I always had crummy luck with the original Benetint, especially when I tried it as a blush but I'm in love with it in my newest purchase, the Benetint Pocket Pal. I've been using this every day since I got it and it works great. Making sure your lips are bare and dry before you brush on the stain really helps and then, when the stain is dry, you have a nice clear gloss for shine. Plus it's easy to put in my purse.

As much as I aspire to more artful make-up, I find that I'm just not skilled. I need a good teacher, I think. Maybe the next time I'm in NYC I'll make the rounds of all my lovely friends and get them to give me a make over.

Basic Influences

I was just over on Coutorture reviewing the latest coverage from the Paris shows and took a run through the Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 runway photos.

As always, my first look is at the shoes and accessories and this show was filled to the brim. What stood out at me first were the more casual shapes of the bags, the willingness to not be pristine about the logo material, and the embellishments.

Mostly because the chunky beading reminded me of old wooden bead stringing sets.

Slightly more mature colors but it's there.

Not that we don't already know that Marc Jacobs (like much of the movie and advertising industries) has a fondness for the elements of his past and is mining the touch points of his 1970s-80s youth. You remember the Lego accessories last year, right?

The show had a very obvious tribal tone to it but seriously, don't you think this shoe is taking it just a bit to far? I mean, come on already!

Lovely as art. Somewhat offensive as footwear?

But overall, and after looking at a bunch of photos from other shows, what I took away from this collection was "Buy More Accessories!"

Not the style, not the clothes (although I love the grassy skirt much like I liked the skirts from the Fall 2007 RTW Prada show) but rather "Here is a bunch of lower price point entry pieces - let's push that."

Or maybe I'm just jaded after reading Deluxe.

I am a huge fan of embellished shoes but these look like an art project gone bad. There isn't a lot of harmony to the design.

Is that what we have in store for us?

It's like the Reality TV mindset of the shoe world. It doesn't matter what it looks like as long as it gets attention.

Keeping Cozy

While scarves have been getting all of the love lately, especially this past Summer, I've been seeing a new more streamline option to go with the close cut looks of the fall.

You may see these called a scarf collar, a scarflette, neck cozies or cowls, but no matter what the maker is calling it, they look wonderfully warm with out being overwhelming or bulky.

A few of my Etsy favorites are as follows.

I love the vintage looking creations that Rudman is creating. Her pieces are felted wool and embellished with unique buttons, fabrics and lace.

Adventures of Jessica Rose's store did their take on a similar design but they are using crocheted cashmere and bamboo yarns, which I bet are just as delightfully soft and snuggly as they sound.

I like the chunky cowl option coming from fringe. This has a retro, graphic charm. I'd wear this over a solid color sweater. I'd bet you wouldn't even need a coat. I just want to bury my chin in to this.

Last year I just fell in love with this piece from Lubee. The colors were very delicate and I like the pretty lavender ribbon which creates the gathers and the sparkle from the sequins. This looks great with my cinnimon coat which I've had since high school and dark wash jeans.

I'm sure there are even more options out there on Etsy. But as you know, most of what's there is created by hand, so you need to snatch them up fast. At least you'll know that there won't be 15 other people wearing the exact same thing as you.

And you'll be toasty warm!

Box Full o' Kawaii

I FINALLY got my box of goodies from JBox. And I when I stress the "finally" I'm not kidding... I ordered this stuff 2 months ago. That's what I get for picking "slow boat from Japan" shipping.

Two months??? What the heck?

Anyways, I had pretty much forgotten what I had ordered by this time so it sort of like getting a gift on Christmas morning. I didn't remember what surprises were in store.

This is also contributed to by the fact that the packaging is in Japanese.

I got a pile of cute and tasty gums - rose, lemon mint, blueberry, rose mint. Delicious!

I also got a bunch of savory snacks - basil crisps, tamari rice crackers (which are particularly delicious), chocolate filled cookie sticks. miso soup and a whole bunch of other flavors.

And I couldn't resist a little kawaii cuteness... I had to get these adorable good luck love owls.

Gah! Cuteness!

In Touch With Nature

I am a huge fan of the unique.

This is why I love the things that come out of Etsy, vintage finds and limited editions (my favorite words!). But it is also what I look for when adding things to my home.

Yes, I have some furniture from Pottery Barn and my crystal is Lismore (possibly Waterford's most popular pattern) but I get really excited when I see true artisan work. Items that are truly crafted - made with love and a skill that is only acquired by time and experience.

I want to bring a piece of that home with me. I want to hold on to it. I want to have something that showcases that skill for posterity. And I want to encourage others to do the same because that is how we ensure that such skills will keep on.

We go to the Farmer's Market near our town almost every weekend. From Spring to Fall there are amazing vendors. We're also lucky to be surrounded and friends with some very talented people. Next to them (okay just in general) we're total untalented shlubs! Several times a year the farmer's market has a craft show. At one of the earlier shows I met a very lovely older gentleman named Bob Barrett who does amazing hand turned and carved wooden pieces. I instantly feel in love with his work and he is the main vendor we look for each time.

The first time I met him I bought this gorgeous Cherry wood bowl.

The bowl has an amazing color to it and is the perfect size for the pile of fruit that we keep on the counter. I also like how the color warms up our mainly black and white kitchen.

What's also great is the satiny smoothness of this piece. You just want to run your hands all over it. It just glows.

The next time Bob was at the show I bought these two pieces. The first is a large bowl about 6" deep made of red cedar. It's hard to tell from the flash the true depth of color that this piece has but it is just gorgeous in person.

If you enlarge the image you can really see where Bob's skill shines through. He works with each piece of wood and takes into account the unique attributes that it has and plays them up. He preserves the integrity of the wood... in this instance you can see where the edge of the bowl is almost paper thin. At the thickest point the wood is about 1/4". It just amazes me!

We keep this bowl on the mantle in the library where it definitely has a pride of place.

The other piece we have is this Burl Oak Compote.

It would be hard to say I have a favorite but I am seriously in love with this. I just adore the pattern of the wood. When I saw it in his booth I had to have it. The shape of the piece is great too. We keep it out on display as art but it's very functional as well. I like to use it for holding candy during movie nights!

Our new favorite wedding gift is one of Bob's pieces. I think there is a lot of symbolism inherent in giving one of his pieces. Unique, sturdy, functional but beautiful, filled with love and care. What better gift or good wishes could you give?

Bob will also do special orders if you ask him. If you have something in mind - a shape or a kind of wood, he will search around until he finds it for you and then will make it as close to your specs as possible. You don't even have to pay for it up front because he'll sell it regardless. He carves his signature and the date into the underside of each piece. I predict that years from now you see people collecting his work.

Water Conservation

No, I'm not going to get all environmental here. I'm just have to talk about my new love - dry shampoo. I know I'm late to get on the bandwagon but, hey, better late than never.

I have long hair that I have to wash pretty much every day other wise it becomes a big stringy mop which is also great for my complexion. If I don't wash it - greasy. If I don't condition it - huge tangles. Lots of fun. The other fun part is it takes forever to dry. So when I ignore the alarm and wake up late, I know I'm not going to make up any time because I still have to wash my stupid hair.

Also, for some reason, my hair has not been reacting well to any shampoo and conditioner. I try to get ones without sulfates but they are leaving my hair too hard to comb through. And the regular Pantene stuff is not rinsing out well. I don't know what to do.

But for now I've got this secret weapon and I love it!

I know there are a number of dry shampoos out there but this is the only one I've tried so far - Klorane Dry Oat Shampoo.

You just spray it on and then brush it out. Just like the instructions say. Amazing!

But it works!

Even on my thick hair, it works so well that I can't believe it. And it makes my hair actually look fuller. And not greasy. I love it! It's also good for color-treated hair as you reduce the amount you are washing out your color.

I think I'm going to have to buy a can to replace this one plus a can for my office. Maybe another one for my purse because it's small enough to fit in there. If you have any recommendations for other brands or a solution to my shampoo/conditioner traumas, I'd be happy to get your advice!

Cast Your Eyes Down

Way back in February, Queen Michelle posted about the fabulous Scottish leg wear label Bebaroque and introduced them with amazing images of the decadently embellished tights that they create.

They have wildly patterned, covered in sequins or even dimensional like these. In April she showed images of the fringed tights here (or just scroll down). It seems Queen Michelle was popping eyes and stirring up trouble with her tattoo patterned pair.

It always amazes me how surprised people get when you wear something other than boring old-fashioned sort-of-nude pantyhose (ick!) or solid black.

But how much more interesting are these patterned beauties? And apparently they're quite versatile too.

Now tights with a ton of metal circles running down your legs (front or back) are sure to get you some notice, but hey, that's why we're here. Right?

Personally I like the teal and silver as much as the black and gold.

And look at Miss Bubble modeling the hot pink with fringe. They're even more vibrant in her photos than the site shows.

I liked the so much, I got all of these - the black with teal, the teal with silver dots, the cream with black and the hot pink and fringe.

With these and my new Chanel two-tone tights, Fall is going to be a very colorful... and interesting time. Time to shake some folks up.

I tried to hold out as long as I could but finally I could no longer resist and had to, just had to, get some new items from the amazingly talented folks who's sites I follow and who make the best stuff on Etsy!

First off I got this adorable poster from Miss Nubby Twiglet. She has as much graphic talent in her personal fashion style as she does in her graphic design. Working in advertising and loving fashion, I appreciate both things to a huge degree. I can't wait to find a home for this, but should it be in my office at work or here at home????

I just wrote about my love for Miss Lou Lou and her darling bows. I ended up getting Alice blue (love the name, love the color) and the hot pink. I think next will be red and maybe some of her sexy satin-y knickers.

I saw this poster from Jenny's Bake Shop on Flicker, and being a fan of the original, I loved the cheekiness of her version.

I want to look like all of the elfin girls in Jasmine's art. I decided on Queen Elizabeth and the Lion because I'm in a huge English history reading streak. Plus I'm a Leo and a red head, so it's perfect.

I finally got the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster. I think this, the cupcake version above and, maybe my Village "For Like Ever" poster as a triptych display may be in order.

Then I just went crazy with accessories! I'm not kidding.

I got one of these plume pins from Topsy Turvy Design in brass and teal. I'm planning on wearing teal and purple all Fall and Winter long. This will go on blazers, bags, hats, skirt, all over the place, I think.

I know I have a Champagne tag necklace but I couldn't not get this Brandy one. The little charms give it a more cutesy appeal plus it's kind of a personal joke... my parents almost named me Brandy! It would not have been a good combo with my last name. I would have sounded like a drink order. Eek!

I fell in love with this necklace from Heatherly Designs. She does these really interesting vintage inspired pieces and I thought the shape of this was so unusual. I love the deep crimson color of this too.

I also got this piece from her. The pendant reminded me of cinnabar.

I even like the chain.

This piece was from The Hand of Fatima's store (same as the Brandy necklace above). She makes pieces from re-purposed vintage pieces and I really like that unique element. This pendant reminds me of the jewelry in one of my favorite Marilyn Monroe movies - The Prince and the Showgirl.

I even like the chain detail.

But on a another note, I like utter modern, totally Bubblegum Plastic-ness of this this cameo necklace from Zombuki. She has other colors too, so check them out.

And last, but certainly not least, more delightful strangeness from Paraphernalia. I can wait to wear these around my more conservative friends and co-workers. The heart makes them look twice, what will the skull necklace do?

I still love owls even if the "fad" is over for a bit. A confused owl? Yes please.

I'm going to have a Poochie nameplate at last! I'll need to take a picture in this.

I may wear this all the time. Especially when I'm going out. ; ) I don't think I really trade it away but maybe I'll get some good offers.

Botkier for Target

I'm not a huge bag person so I can't say I'm overly familiar with the Botkier brand. Maybe that helps to give me an objective opinion of the new designer pairing with Target.

But the pictures leading up to the launch of this line made me interested in seeing the real thing.

I like distressed leather especially in metallics. So I really wanted to see this hobo bag in particular.

Well, I was in Target yesterday and I did get to see them.

And, well, frankly they sucked. Big time. They looked like cheap vinyl which is, I guess, what they are.

I didn't see every style in the line but what I saw wasn't good.

Not recommended.

On a Wing and a Prayer

One of the things that is hard about living in, what I like to call, Designer Fashion Exile is feeling left out of some of the cool new things. Things like the amazing collaboration between Viktor & Rolf and Shu Uemura.

Luckily I have fabulous blogs to read and bloggers to emulate who keep me informed of such matters, and the Internet to help supply what my local stores lack.

When Miss Susie Bubble sported a pair of the Wing (aka "paperclip") eyelashes, I knew that I too could not resist trying to track down a pair for myself.

Not sure how it happened but I was able to get an amazing deal on a pair through Ebay. They even came with a little book that talks about the designers, the Lash Bar and about each of the eyelashes. All of these images are in the book in a nice big size and it showa "in-process" images of the pink on pink harlequin make-up as well.

The Wing set is the most couture and graphic of the three designs and the quote from Viktor & Rolf about them says:

"These lashes were created with the concept of the eye becoming a dove, the delicate miniature wings give the eyes an expression of bewilderment, enchantment. The mind wanders, and airborne, a messenger of hope."

One of my aspirations in life is to go to or host a grand masquerade ball. I would love to get this make-up to go along with a fantastical and fantasy themed outfit.

Until then, maybe I'll just wear them to shock my friends into thinking I'm even nuttier than they already believe.

Getting An Eyeful

I've always liked thick fluttery lashes. In fact, I've often been accussed of batting my eyes maybe a little too much. The one make-up item I would not want to do without is mascara. But I haven't ever played too much with fake eyelashes. They just seemed too regular, too close to how my actual lashes look so I didn't see the point.

But in the past few years we've been seeing more and more "fun" lashes. Lashes that aren't suppossed to look real but are just adorable in their fakeness.

I blame Shrinkle for my obsession with over-the-top feather lashes. I got these pink ones from her store last year.

I also got them in black too. Plus, Miss Shrinkle is a tempting model too. How you could not want to imitate her adorable-ness.

Susie Bubble got the uber-cool Viktor & Rolf paperclip eyelashes herself (I'm hoping to track down a pair for a very modern look I'd like to try). Sadly we don't have a Lash Bar in my town, but they do have a good selection of their lashes on the site so I went on a ordered myself up a few pairs - nothing tame here. We like the crazy ones!

I did get the Lash Repair as well as the adhesive so they would go on properly.

These are about as subtle as I wanted to get - the Black Velvet Feather lashes. They look almost subtle here, right?

Nope! Big and feathery! I was just playing around with them when I got them home on Friday. I can't wait to do a real run with them.

Then we get into the really fun ones - the Premium Velvet Feather lashes made of wispy brown feathers.

They're huge! And match my hair color...

I love them. Now I just have to try and apply them properly. Do you think they would be too much for wearing to work?

Key to My Heart

While browsing on the Creatures of Comfort site tonight, I saw this adorable Keyhole necklace. You see a lot of necklaces with keys but I think this piece could have more meanings. Do you have a secret? Are you a secret garden unto yourself? Are you keeping a secret for someone else?

Bad Trade for Beads

Apparently Stella McCartney is still under the delusion that bead are really really valuable.

Stella! The Dutch really didn't get Manhattan for $24 in trade beads and neither can you!

Look at this necklace, currently on sale at Net-a-Porter. It's originally priced at $285. Dollars.

Let's go to the close-up to see how ridiculous that is...

Those are regular old seed beads. And not that many of them. And not in a very intricate pattern. Just strings of seed beads attached to a ribbon. I could go to Michael's and get the materials for this necklace to the tune of about $20.

I had this in mind when I went to Target yesterday. And while I wasn't actively looking for jewelry, they had a ton of really cute pieces that would go well with the ethnic/safari style. I bought two necklaces, two bracelets and a carved wood ring. I need to take more photos, but here's what I'm wearing today.

This necklace had a ton of strands of bronze-y brown beads in graduating layers.

I really liked this woven bangle and it goes perfectly with the dress I'm wearing today.

It's kind of hard to tell, but this is a carved wooden wring. The top is a beveled rectangle and it has a great spotted pattern. Plus it's large enough to make a statement but not overly showy. Plus it's pretty comfortable.

The other necklace was a long black and tan beaded necklace and a tan multi-beaded stretch bracelet. I'll be wearing them soon I'm sure.

What's great is that there are literally TONS of pieces on line (although I couldn't find the ones I bought) and they are all very inexpensive. My necklaces were around $15 each and the ring and bracelets were $8.

So, again, Stella must have lost her mind with this one.

Golden Butter and Caramel

I know I keep saying I'm not a huge collector of sunglasses, but I did work in the corporate offices of Sunglass Hut for a time, so I guess I'm predisposed to appreciate them.

I love the color of these Lilly Pulitzer sunglasses made from a lovely golden horn.

They'd be great paired with the Michael Kors watch, which I also love and still want.

Weak and Strong

I've always wished that I had long delicate fingers with long nail beds that look perfect even with short nails. Nails that you can wear dark polish and it looks elegant.

But no. I have small hands and short fingers with equally short nail beds. What's worse, I used to bite my nails as a child. And even though I've broken that habit, my nails still suck. They're very weak. They tend to get a split about halfway down and below the quick. Basically pretty terrible.

But lately they've been holding they're own and not completely breaking off. Hooray! Now, they're not all strong and sturdy like a friend of mine in high school (hers were like iron. I was so jealous.) but, they're still here.

And look! They look pretty decent for once.

The only thing that I've ever used that has really helped to keep them sturdy enough to grow is Nailtiques. I don't use it every day now like it says, but it helps to get them going. Once they are long enough, it helps just to take care of them. Keep them polished, file any rough spots so they don't catch anywhere. Be aware of how your hands move and don't knock your hands around.

All of those things have contributed to this change, I'm sure. But I think there is one other big thing that has helped....

Yes, yellow rubber gloves. Okay, they don't need to be yellow (mine are currently blue) but, I know these have kept my nails intact. I don't do the dishes all of the time but when I do I wear these. I wear a pair when cleaning too. We know how soft nails can get when immersed in water, especially hot enough to clean the dishes, and mine don't need any encouragement to be weak.

I've been wearing these for a month or so and since I added them to the routine I've seen an amazing change.

If you have weak, soft or brittle nails, this simple addition could make a difference.

Seeing the World Through Rose-Colored Glasses

There were only two things I really really wanted from Miu Miu's Spring/Summer 2008 show - the tea cup heels and these stained-glass sunglasses.

Well, I got the heels and I LOVE them but I'm now very sad. I've had my name on a waiting list at the New York Miu Miu store for months. I was going to stop by one of the stores when I'm in town next week to try them on, if they'd come in by then. But when I called the store on Friday I found out they they are not going to be making these because they are too challenging.

Bummer!

I can't imagine why that would be. I know some have been made because I've seen them in pictures and the store said a UK store (???) got them. I'm sure whatever they cost they would get back. So why, oh why aren't they making them. Especially when they were featured so prominently in the campaign.

If anyone sees a pair for sale or has any feedback I'd love to hear about it.

Time in a Bottle

Lately I've received a couple of samples of lotions to test out, and while I'm no big expert or consumer of lotions, I do have really fair and sensitive skin. With the change in climate from Florida to North Carolina, I've also been spending more time outside and dealing with issues like wind-burn and forced heat induced dryness.

The first sample I got was directly from the company. They sent me a bottle of their SkinMD Shielding lotion which has aloe in it. After I was out at the antiques fair this worked great to calm down some redness I had gotten and it wasn't overly heavy or sticky, so I could put it on before bed. You can order bottles from the site or there is a store locator too.

The second lotion I got was a new night cream from Aveeno in their Positively Ageless line. The big ingredient they're touting is shiitake extract and wheat protein.

As I've said, my skin, being fair, pre-rosacea and tempermental, doesn't like change. I also don't buy a lot of expensive lotions or washes because I've found more basic things work well and don't make me react. But I am big on moisturizing and have been since high school. I think that is something I've always done no matter what the evening brings - wash my face and moisturize.

I have to say this is a good product. It's not a light cream but it absorbs really well and in the morning my face has been looking all glowy and not puffy. So I'd give this a thumbs up. Infallible Choices

I am one of those people that get seduced by great colors in lip gloss. I don't buy a ton of it, but it does happen. I also get lured in by the possibilities but then I put them on and I either hate the taste or texture or the color just looks horrible on me.

But I was in Target on Saturday and saw these new L'Oreal Infallible Never Fail lip glosses and thought I would give them a try. I got two colors - Rebel Red, which is not too red, and Fiery, which looks brownish with gold flecks. Both of them look really great on although they do look different on than in the tube.

The wand is a little odd. It's in this kind of diamond shape which holds the gloss and applies it well on the bottom lip but is a little challenging for the top. I like to layer these colors as well.

I didn't realize they were long wear gloss but they really do work. I'm not sure about six hours but I wore them to a tea party yesterday and the color was still there at the end of the party. With all the sipping of tea and eating sandwiches that went on, that's pretty impressive.

The texture has some thickness but not overwhelmingly so. I hope they keep this product around, especially in these colors.

Give Me Liberty!

I mentioned I was going to an antiques festival this past weekend and hoped to come home with some great finds. As always, even when you go with an idea in mind, you never know what you are going to come home with.

Liberty antiques festival is actually pretty good. I was looking for things like vintage feathers and pins but didn't come home with either of that. I did buy a monogrammed pillow made from vintage grain bag fabric and a folk are mini vanity mirror. I also got this adorable little silverplate pitcher for $5.

I shined it up a bit. It isn't perfect but that doesn't bother me. I like how the silver looks like gathered fabric.

On the fashion front I got two vintage bags. This first one is a red, probably '80s, leather clutch.

It's a good large size but not over-sized and has two compartments. I think it was $20.

I also got this adorable little faux croc bag in black patent. It's very petite but just adorable.

I wouldn't classify it as pristine but I'd give it a good 90 - 95%.

Liberty was the source of my vintage lizard bag. So don't overlook the antiques festivals. Typically it's furniture, jewelry and housewares but this year there was a dealer who had only vintage lingerie. Miss C went with me and she got a lovely piece there.

You never know what you're going to find!

Y, oh Y Do I Love Paris???

I'm not sure why I want this so much. But I just do.

I am adoring this Yves Saint Laurent "Y-mail" postcard clutch. I don't even use clutches or evening bags all that often. Not often enough to have more than the few I own now which I also don't use that much. And especially given that it's $395.

But it's also very cute and cheeky. I love the lady's profile in the faux stamp. And the Paris address to which I aspire someday.

I'm just going to pine away for this over here for a little while. Okay?

I'm not sure if I can directly contribute the growing trend of jewelry featuring elephants to the growing interest and awareness of the Indian and Asian markets or if it's because the everyone is as smitten as I am with the new Hermes campaign "Hermes Orange, Indian Pink" (which is gorgeous by the way - check out all the ads), but they are definetly on the rise.

I love the Hermes brand. They are one of the final true luxury brands that care about craftsmanship and are less of a company of sell-outs.

Anyway, I just got this fun little elephant necklace from Target mainly because it had a vintage-y feel to it, but also because it keeps with my accent colors for Summer.

But when I was reading my Lucky magazine this weekend I saw a whole slew of elephant pieces. They featured this ring from Palm Beach Jewelry. They have a bunch of other elephant pieces too.

They had this ring from Moss Mills -

I loved this bracelet from JCrew but I don't think they are carrying it anymore. I'll be you could find a vintage piece like this.

I did a quick search eBay and found this mother-of-pearl necklace. I've seen lots of these in jade too.

What I like about the elephant motif is this it looks vintage but also has a modern Asian feel too. Exotic and safari-chic.

This a follow up to my previous rant about D&B and their goofy Haden Panettiere pairing.

While I still have some love for D&B, I have to say that the marketing copy in their latest catalog is some of the lamest stuff I've ever read. And that is saying a lot. Here it is in all of its mediocrity. Sadly, there is a lot of it.

I don't often aspire to feel as radiant as a celebrity. Generally they look kind of grimy. Maybe that's just my take. And where did all these stupid flashbulbs come from?

If I don't know who HP is, why would I want to plunk down $500 for a bag "designed" by her?
A very young girl who plays a cheerleader on a TV show evokes the sophistication of the past. Uh huh. Gotcha.
Every woman is a vision...with her favorite pair of sunglasses and a handbag. Subtle with the product integration there, guys.

On Friday I was at Target doing a serious round of shopping for some Spring basics and I spent a good amount of time in the jewelry department. I checked out the new Subversive line a bit (I need to do a closer look) but mainly just browsed through the fun inexpensive stuff. As I was sifting through the multitude of new items, this necklace caught my eye.

This is not a high-quality piece by any stretch (it's only $12), but it was cute and would look okay from far away. But the reason it caught my eye is because I totally knew what they swiped this design from.

Look familiar? These are the Forever Pendants by Bernardaud and are $215 on Vivre.

These are porcelain and the hearts are accented with painted chain detailing. They have a toggle closure and feature a application of gold or platinum edging. The colors are just lovely, I especially like the lavender and the red versions. But isn't it surprising that such a small piece could be remade for the mass-market and even more surprising to stumble upon it.

Designer Focus - Shompole Collection

I'm not sure if you read the article about her, but Elizabeth Gilbert was featured in the March issue of Domino magazine. The article wrote a lot about her lifestyle and what she does, but it also featured some of the local hand-crafted products and jewelry she is creating a store for to help support the local Maasai and to help preserve their artistry and way of life.

Her site says it better:

What caught my eye were the amazing jewelry pieces that were featured in the issue. I contacted Liz to learn more. Each piece is unique due to the hand-crafted nature and the variations in the natural product they use. I love the heft of this ring.

And look at the colors in this Lamu Shell Ring ($1,500). Shells always have such a glow about them. I have several shell serving pieces, but very little jewelry. This is so simple and elegant.

Reflections of You

I have a fondness for all things vintage and I also love old fashioned mannerisms. One holdover, like gloves and handkerchiefs, that I want to help bring back is the pretty compact. Of course, it can be tacky to touch up your full face of make-up in public, but a quick pat of powder, a swipe of lipstick and a discreet check to make sure you don't have food or lipstick on your teeth is perfectly acceptable.

And pulling out one of these compacts would be a lady-like and fun way to dress up the process?

I'm kind of torn. Do I go for something totally over the top girly Heart of Hearts compact?

Or more classic and elegant with the Tuberose Gardenia compact which comes in a powdered compact or simply a mirrored compact.

This Twinkling Pink compact is a feminine but still subtle version too.

All of these are by Estee Lauder and are refillable. I actually used to have an Estee Lauder compact that was based on signs of the zodiac. I'm a Leo so mine was gold in the shape of a lion's head with small rhinestones. I just can't find it, so I think I need to get a new one. Then I need to make room in my purse not only for all the modern technology I have in there (two phones, a digital camera and my iPod) but also for a little retro glamor.

Confessions and Second Guesses

Okay, I have to make a confession. When the first images of the SATC movie came out I was swept up in the excitement and giddy fashion. And I was especially enamored of the Timmy Woods Eiffel Tower purse.

I mean, being in the move aside, it's a really cute bag. Especially the version covered in Swarovski crystals. 'Cause I love stuff embellished with crystals.

But, yeah, it's $2500. But I really really wanted it. And it's going to be an "It" bag, right? And I could get my hands on it first. So when the movie came out and everyone loved it I would have had it for months. Cool, right?

Yeah, but it's $2500. And even I am not going to spend $2500 on this. A Judith Leiber, yes (maybe). But I just couldn't justify it.

So I thought, I'll get the regular, non-crystal version (eeewww... regular. blech!). Which just happens to be $375.

So I ordered it. In the months it was backordered I kind of forgot about it and, I guess, lost my giddiness for it. Because when it arrived at my doorstep and I opened the box all I could think was: "Crap! I just paid $375 for a painted piece of wood."

The other thought that entered my mind, besides that fact that the interior of this thing is so small I could barely (and this is totally serious) barely fit a tube of lipstick, was "Will I look like a complete poser, dork, wannabe if I carry around this bag especially after the movie comes out?"

Now normally I don't think I would care as much what anyone thought but it is such an obvious bag that it would beg the comparison all the time. So I sent it back. Only a little sad but very much more relieved.

Now maybe if I had the crystal version I might have kept it.....hmmm....

Yes, I think I'm having a small mirror obsession at the moment. Also, for some reason I think I live a gorgeous jet-setting life. One in which I totally need a stack of mirrored agendas. Also one in which said agendas would not be scratched all to pieces in five minutes.

Who am I trying to kid here? But, when I win that lottery its all silver agendas all the time. In which I will schedule my naps.

I want the Hermes Kelly watch in orange and stainless-steel.

I'm not even sure why I like it so much because I typically don't even like a leather banded watch and prefer to wear mine loose, almost bracelet-y.

So, I now am up to needing the two Michael Kors watches and this one.

Loeffler Randall for Target

While I'm not a fan of the Loeffler Randall shoes for Target this season, I am kind of smitten with this hobo tote in cream.

I think this is the nicest piece in the line. Granted, I haven't seen it or felt the material in person but it looks like a nice large size and I am a sucker for a white/vanilla bag. Since it's leather it should wipe down fairly easy.

It also comes in brown and is only $39.99

I have a big tendency to, if' I'm really in love with a style of something, to get it in multiple colors. And now JCrew is trying to take advantage of that fact, darn them!

As you know, I am a total Etsy convert and I placed an order not too long ago. I finally got to order some pieces from Paraphernalia, which I think is the coolest store.

How they describe their work is:

We at Paraphernalia design beauteous and wholesome accoutrements for both Ladies and Gentlemen.

We are much inspired by both vintage illustrations and 19th century magicians. We also enjoy the odd, the unusual, the uncanny and the bizarre, in all the aspects of beauty.

If you haven't seen their work, you have to go check them out.

What I love about them is that you can wear them with so many levels - very seriously or you can wear them very tongue-in-cheek. I have chickens, so this Fauna Chicken Claw Necklace can be just weird or, if you know that we have them, it's kind of funny.

I also got this Anatomica Arm Bracelet. I like that you are wearing this on your arm but you are also wearing an image of the musculature of the arm. Okay, so yeah it's a bit weird.

I also got the Anatomica Red Heart Necklace. And I don't think I need to say anything about it, just look how freakin' cool it is.
